The Grounds

A walk through the gardens.

Three acres, laid out around water. Follow the path the way visitors do — through the gate, past the mill pond, over the bridges, to the lake and the lawns beyond.

A weathered timber garden gate, half-open between tall planting
I · The Gate

Through the gate, the sound of the road gives way to water.

Water lilies crowding the surface of the mill pond
II · The Mill Pond

Lilies hold the surface. The house keeps its distance.

Stone arches of a bridge standing over calm water
III · The Bridges

Stone crossings, worn smooth. Every one a vantage point.

The lake in full leaf, trees leaning over the far bank
IV · The Lake

The heart of the grounds. Still enough to double the sky.

Open, level lawns held in by mature trees
V · The Lawns

Flat, open ground held in by old trees. Room for a marquee, or for nothing at all.

And the rest

The corners the walk misses.

The old mill and its outbuildings. Woodland running along the boundary. And a different garden every season — blossom, full leaf, copper, frost.
